According to one of the only first hand reports coming out of Burma the military systematically swept the grid-like streets of Rangoon over the weekend, hunting down groups of young protesters, beating them with long sticks and carrying them away.
The Herald's special correspondent reported blatant thuggery and beatings of protesters. The Herald also carries a rare photo of protesters being detained.
Unable to fight the army on its own terms, the protesters - armed with rocks and bricks - are moving from street to street, in an intifada-like effort to keep Burma's sputtering revolt alive.
"They have taken the children," said an older Burmese man as he looked down the narrow lane where the military had marched away a group of about 20 boys in their late teens. "They are inhuman," said a boy minutes after the arrests. "They have no god, no heart. They blocked the road and hunted for the ones who ran into stairways. They beat them."
